Even in the capitalist society of USA, we have such notable researchers -
" Millionaire thinking, as researched by Thomas J Stanley and William Danko, shows that living well below your financial means, investing smartly (such as buying reliable rather than flashy, expensive things), and staying financially independent (rather than showing off the wealth you do have) is the way to remain grounded and secure throughout your life." - [The Millionaire Next Door, http://www.bainvestor.com/TheMillionaireNextDoor.html]
I have seen some of the traditional young Indians who are not 'grounded' as defined above. Sad thing is they try to become happy by earning and spending more; however, this behavior only increases dissatisfaction and hence unhappiness.
I usually avoid preaching (here or anywhere) - but the above behavior has become a concern of increasing intensity within my nearby circle.
I try to remain grounded by-
1. Cycle to work
2. Wish to stay in a smaller house
3. Wish to spend less on appliences
4. Reduce inventory of my kitchen. Sometime, much of this stuff is wasted.
5. Conserve water (take bath alternate days, brush teeth only when absolutely required, etc) - TBTILV.
6. Conserve electricity.
7. Use public transport. Use trains rather than taking flights.
8. Speak less.
